2007: Norcal Tactical Bolt Rifle Challenge

A last-minute cancellation opened up a slot for me to try out tactical shooting at Sacramento. This was a big match with 43 shooters and nice prizes on the line. Unfortunately, a few mistakes and zero practice netted me 22nd place, but I learned a lot all the same. Looking forward to more matches of this format.......Thanks Vu Pham for organizing a great match and getting me on the roster!

2005: Production Pistol

Curtis Fuetsch finally talked me into getting back in a pistol shoot --- 10 years since the last, no less. The Western Nevada Pistol League puts on small local matches in addition to regular IPSC shoots, so I took a couple of 9mm's (Beretta 92 & HK USPc) out to see if I could hit anything. With four stages of practical target scenarios, there was plenty of variety. I hadn't shot but 60 rounds or so through the HK prior to the match, so I was surprised to find that my results were decent: 1st Place (Beretta) and 3rd Place (HK). I had a blast, and will definitely be out for more. Thanks Curtis!

2001: 1000-Yard Fifty Caliber Shooters Association Matches

With these matches I used sandbags instead of expensive rests, and even tried out a bipod for target #4 in Heavy Class during the August competition. This was a real opportunity to see what shooting at long range is like under controlled conditions, and I consider the experience invaluable. The cost of shooting these matches (~$500 for a 2-class, 2-day weekend) is completely prohibitive, and so I do not expect a repeat appearance any time soon. I got to make some great acquaintances and shoot with some amazing people during this time --- maybe someday I will again...

2000-2001: 600-Yard Centerfire Benchrest

These were matches held at the Palomino Valley Gun Club near Reno, Nevada. They were always exciting, although I felt very out-of-place with my obviously "make-do" gear. With the exception of the 50BMG, I always shot off of a Harris bipod.

In these events, participants got one target, with 10 shots for group & score. A few minutes of sight-in time was allowed before the 10-minute scoring period.

In most cases I was competing against high-end weapons (Remington 40x's and various custom numbers) being shot off heavy rests by some of the better long-range shots in the country. The one time that I used the 50 BMG at 600 yards was actually done to prep my setup for an upcoming 1000yd match. The resulting group --- 4-7/8" for 10 shots --- is still listed on the AAA Ammo website.

1994-1995: Steel Plate Handgun Competitions

These were my very first matches, and were pretty exciting. They were held by the Northern Nevada Law Enforcement Association in various locations around the state during the summertime. I got to shoot with several people who were (or became) good friends and/or shooting influences during my pre-collage years --- Tom Sanford, Judge Vic Trujillo, "Goose" College, and Mike Martolin come to mind.

These events involved two competitors drawing & shooting identical lanes of targets ranging from 5 to 40 yards away. The winner cleared all targets and hit the "stop" target first. Very fun!
